Ask the expert: my husband has a fatty liver

A fatty liver is a sign that something is wrong with your lifestyle

My husband has been diagnosed with fatty liver. His cholesterol levels are also high. Can you suggest a healthy Indian diet that can be followed by all the family and is liver-friendly?

A fatty liver is a sign that something is wrong with your lifestyle. These are a few must-dos for your husband if his condition is not related to alcohol consumption. Do consult a doctor before you start this diet.

Your husband can start his day with 1 tbsp of virgin coconut oil. He must monitor the amount of oily foods he consumes through the day, and drink a juice made of one green gourd, a cucumber, mint leaves, an inch of ginger, water and lemon juice daily. It will cleanse the liver and work as a bile thinner too.

Keep a close check on the quality of carbs he consumes. He needs to keep off fast carbs like potatoes, bread, refined sugar and rice. High cholesterol is often due to consuming the wrong carbs at the wrong time or having trans fats found in biscuits, chips and junk food.

If your husband is a smoker, he must quit immediately and start exercising – walking for 45 minutes, four times a week in the least. This will reduce fat around his organs. A bowl of oats soaked in almond milk and 1 tbsp of flaxseed powder should be had at breakfast or as a post-workout meal.
