I am 38 years old and was overweight – around 110kg – until a year ago. With exercise and diet, I lost more than 28kg, and now am at the right weight for my height. However, my arms appear very flabby, with a lot of loose skin. Can plastic surgery help?

You should ensure that you have a proper consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon who performs a lot of these surgeries, and the surgeon should explain carefully the benefits as well as the risks.

Usually for loose skin on the arms, there is only one surgical option, which is to remove the excess skin. This would leave a scar from the armpit down the arm to just above the elbow.

For some patients, this scar is too much and they would choose the loose skin instead, while others would rather have a scar than flabby arms. This is a personal decision that the patient must make.

It is important that your surgeon is experienced enough to deal with this type of procedure to ensure there is minimum scarring by stitching with the best possible technique. The surgery will usually be a day-case one under sedation, so you can go home the same day.
