Homegrown music and arts festival Groove on The Grass is back for its fifth season on Feb 17 at Emirates Golf Club, Dubai. The EDM fest is bringing a host of international artists – Norwegian music duo Röyksopp, Canadian music producer Marc Houle and Italian trio Agents of Time. Before the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship starts on February 19, Irish Village is celebrating the tournament’s 25th anniversary today with Jazzattak – an event featuring performances by Mica Paris, Mud Morganfield, aka Muddy Waters Junior, El Trio, The Diablos and Sannie Fox. Love Latin music and dirty dancing? Seafood restaurant Catch’s Havana Mondays brings a piece of Cuba’s barrios to Dubai every Monday. The six-piece Cubache band from Havana performs weekly at the pop-up concept playing salsa, funk and Cuban son – a fusion of Latin and Afro rhythms recreating the 1950s golden age of music and the Latin American nation’s retro lounge scene. Summer Nights arrive early this year: Grease – The Musical is coming to Dubai from April 7-13. The new production by the UK’s Curve Theatre directed by Nikolai Foster will play at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Expect to be Hopelessly Devoted as the stage version of the John Travolta film – with songs such as Greased Lightnin’ and You’re The One That I Want – brings alive 1950s Chicago’s greaser subculture, the angsty teenage gang at Rydell High School and Sandy and Danny’s star-crossed love. Another iconic, this time operatic, take on star-crossed lovers will play out at Dubai Opera from March 2-4, with a revival of Madame Butterfly. Joachim Herz’s production narrates the story of young Japanese woman, Cio-Cio-San (Madam Butterfly), and American naval officer Lieutenant Pinkerton in 1980s Nagasaki. Their doomed love is set to Puccini’s legendary score including the Flower Dues, Humming Chorus and Un Bel Di. Matinee shows are at 3pm and evening shows at 8pm. Tickets from Dh300 at dubaiopera.com.
Blue is the most entertaining colour come April when the Blue Man Group perform at du Forum, Yas Island, from April 18-22 as part of their new world tour. The theatre group that combines, comedy, rock concerts using custom instruments, light and art in their silent performances (the three performers never speak) was conceived in 1991 and has since toured in over 20 countries and made an appearance on the American sitcom Arrested Development.
