There’s almost a month to go before schools officially close for summer, but Splash ’n’ Party, the children’s water park in Jumeriah, is offering a respite to kids who are restless to get into vacay mode with the End of School Carnival on May 21. The one-day event will help children beat the heat with water guns, water balloons, carnival games and live entertainment from 3.30pm-6.30pm. Dh100 per child. Call 04 388 3008.

Here’s a new children’s musical that’s out of this world: Robbie’s Supersonic Rocket, a musical that explores the six-year-old Robbie and his cat Moggy’s adventures on Planet Zod takes place on May 19 and 20 at the Hartland International School, Nad Al Sheba, Dubai. Based on British writer Hazel Hiles’ illustrated children’s book, this production features seven original songs. Tickets from Dh90 at platinumlist.net.

Active kids can still enjoy the outdoors this summer with Aventura’s night sessions. The zip-lining park in Dubai is open until 10pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until mid-June;. Each participant will be given with a head torch and left to explore the lightly lit park. The available time slots are 6.30pm,

Fests for foodies

Doughnut miss out on the National Doughnut Week celebrations at Bread Street Kitchen at Atlantis, The Palm on May 19. The restaurant will be serving up varieties of themed doughnuts – ice cream doughnuts, jam doughnuts – to celebrate the deep-fried desserts adored by Homer Simpson, policemen in American TV shows, and us. Dh45 per person; 6-10.30pm.

Now this is our kind of non-stop party – McGettigan’s JLT’s six-hour-long Bumper Brunch on May 19 has an unlimited menu that will let you eat and drink all you can from noon-6pm. The menu will include Irish nosh and live entertainment. Dh249 per person; call 04 378 0800.

It can’t get any cheesier that the Festival del Formaggio at Italian restaurant Villa Toscana, St Regis Abu Dhabi. On until May 26, it celebrates Italy’s cheese heritage – the country has produced cheese for 3,000 years and has over 37 varieties. You can sample some of them, such as burrata and mozzarella made of buffalo milk. Daily from 7-11pm; the unlimited cheese package is Dh120 per person. Call 02 694 4553.

Free music events always sound good. The Mall at World Trade Centre Abu Dhabi is celebrating Musicians Day (Fête des musiciens) on May 19. Organised by the Alliance Française, it is open to amateurs who want to perform and share their music. Professional performers will entertain: multi-percussionist Cyberberes (Malika Abbes), French folk music duo Mam and jazz musicians Françoise Fognini and Pierre Baillot of the Tribu band. Good talk

Flow, Dubai’s home-grown health hub and creative workspace, is hosting free bi-monthly talks featuring the region’s influential figures. There’s one on May 20 by Abeer Al Khaja, co-founder of Ana Gow Running Club, on the best practices for training during Ramadan and healthy food plans. The 20-minute talks will be followed by a Q&A. Mum’s day out

Mums-to-be can get pampered and feel special this weekend at Aster Nurture’s Mamma Mia event on May 19 at Aster Hospital, Mankhool. Part of Aster’s celebrations for International Mother’s Day, the event for expectant mums only includes makeovers and photo shoots, demo sessions on first aid, a ‘dedication to mums’ contest, where mums can write down an essential parenting skill they learnt from their mum that they intend to use to raise their child. There will also be a raffle draw at the end of each session with winners taking home a box containing 49 baby essentials. Sessions from 10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm; call 055 831 4822.

Films to save the planet

World Environment Day is only on June 5 but it’s never too early to move over to the green and eco-friendly side. On May 20, Locomotion UAE is organising a free screening of Before The Flood, the documentary on climate change by Leonardo DiCaprio, at Vox Cinemas, Mall of the Emirates. Plastic use comes into focus on May 22, when Goumbook – an initiative that helps people cut down on their use of plastic – screens A Plastic Ocean, at 4.30pm at Madinat Theatre.
