Muzey nights

Looking for a spot to enjoy live music, but in the cosy confines of a restaurant? Head to Muze at Souk Al Bahar, where you can get jazzy on Wednesdays and go retro on Thursdays. Our favourite? Fridays with Cuban band Son de Verdad led by Lamora, who brought along such a passionate stage presence, she had everyone up and dancing as we ate Mexican fusion food from nachos with flaming dips to mini burgers, and exotic Cuban drinks. Call 052 297 2097 to reserve.

Chain of luck

This St Paddy’s Day, the wearing of the green doesn’t mean you have to jump into jade from head to toe and risk resembling a leprechaun. Add a hint of (ever) green to your outfits with this classy Raissa necklace from Milanese brand Rosantica. Coupled with bare ears and high heels, these vintage strands of bright-green quartz beads strung on lovely golden brass chains will dress up any attire with instant Celtic charm. Price on request, Harvey Nichols.

Cranking up the heat

When Peruvian fashion and portrait photographer Mario Testino conquered the world of imagery, he became an icon. Now, his best works – including this enduring image of Kate Moss and the fab Madonna cover on her album Ray of Light – shot over a 35-year career, is on show at Dubai Design District until April 15. Called Heat, this is Mario’s debut exhibition in the region. From 10am, visit

Dublin in Dubai

Here’s a party you wouldn’t want to leave in a hurry! Claw BBQ, the American seafood restaurant at Souk Al Bahar, is throwing a St Patrick’s Day do and parading the best of the Emerald Isle’s food, culture and music for the entire clan. Amid Shamrocks and green decor, dive into Irish rarebit and soda bread, braised lamb shank and leprechaun hat s’mores while classic Gaelic tunes, Bono and U2 play in the background. March 17, from 6pm. Call 04 432 2300 or email

By the book

It’s your last chance to celebrate the written word at the Emirates Lit Fest. From tips on how to write fantasy that’s as good as Game of Thrones to kiddie tea parties dressed up as fairy-tale characters, expert advice on how to increase productivity (and keep your sanity), and prize-giving ceremonies (keep an eye out if you’ve entered the fiction competition or debate), it’s all happening today and tomorrow at InterContinental DFC. Visit for more.

Mini manis

We’ve all smeared on mum’s lipsticks and insisted on joining her manicure sessions as kids. Keep your little doll’s attempts to look like you safe, with water-based Nailmatic Kids varnishes from France. Free of toxic ingredients such as formaldehyde and toluene, the sunny colours easily erase with soapy water, are safe on the tiny talons of nail-biters and come in adorable doodle-scrawled pots. Dh215 for a set of seven. Available at Smitten Boutique, Dubai Marina Mall. Visit

Huawei honor phone

With a design inspired by the stunning Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, the Huawei honor 5X has arrived on Dubai’s shores. If you want style, elegance and tech, you’ll get it with the 5X. But the best part? Its wallet-friendly price of Dh899. Plus, it has 13MP back- and 5MP front-facing cameras, multi-fingerprint sensor, allows three types of SIMs, and is available in gold, grey and silver. Visit to get yours.

Life of pie

There’s more to Irish cuisine than spuds and taters, and we’ll be headed to the Reform Social and Grill in The Lakes to have ourselves some hearty Irish nosh along with beautiful views. Like everyone else, on St Paddy’s Day (March 17) the quintessentially Brit gastropub will get its green on and go Irish with the addition of traditional steak and Guinness pie to the menu (Dh110). From 12pm. For info call 04 4542 638 or email

Big laughs, big stars

The award-winning Middle East Film and Comic Con is back, and it brings along a mega, fun- and celebrity-filled line-up to celebrate its fifth anniversary. Ask Marvel genius Stan Lee questions and buy his signed merchandise. Meet Doc Brown from the Back to the Future series, the voice behind Ash Ketchum from Pokémon, and Fabian Nicieza, the co-creator of Deadpool. Then there’s various activities, workshops, gaming tournaments and screenings to attend – all dressed up in your creative best, of course. But there’s a bigger reason to go. All ticket holders will enter a draw to win a trip for two to LA, where you’ll walk alongside Lee at the premiere of Captain America: Civil War! From Dh100. Tickets are now available online at and at Virgin Megastore outlets. April 7-9 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Visit for info. call 04 4542 638 or email

Doner happy

Bringing the joy of the doner kebab – that iconic Turkish delicacy – to Dubai is yet another gypsy-hip joint: Doner Deli. Its contemporary spin-offs include everything from a gourmet doner sandwich to a doner box, salad or whole meal, accompanied by crunchy salads and trad beverages. The veal, chicken and turkey cuts are completely halal and freshly made – no wonder its four Dubai locations are always buzzing with people! Visit
