Sole choice

Educated in the closed comforts of S/S16’s Oxford flats, we’re thrilled to graduate to its cut-out cousins in these leather lace-up flats from Malone Souliers (Dh2,656). Hearing of the London-based shoemakers for the first time? Founders’ Mary Alice Malone and Roy Luwolt’s haute creations have stirred the soles of Kylie Jenner and Lupita Nyong’o. The retro pointed toes of these shoes-and-sandals hybrid, class up sundresses, dungarees and chinos in taupe and red. Time to geek-chic out this summer. At

Hilton Hotel, Al Ain

While the other six emirates buzz in a storm of activity, tourists and humid torpor, the garden city of Al Ain sits pretty, green and tranquil, an oasis (of calm). And stepping up to the cultural city’s heritage credentials is the Hilton Al Ain – the UAE’s first international hotel built in 1971.

If you think the hotel’s stoic facade has a certain retro charm, step in to explore its various creature comforts, culinary excellence and landscaped gardens, making this five-star hotel a perfect summer staycation. A fact we discovered over a pampering weekend that was all about scrummy food, soaking up sunshine by the pool, lazy lunches, plush beds in the cosy-yet-classy guest rooms, some more excellent nosh and naps. You get the drift.

Flavours, the international restaurant, stays true to its name with appetising themed buffets, and on Fridays with a decadent brunch of salads, live-cooked lamb chops, mezze, creamy pastas, mussels and seafood.

Before all that hearty fare induced a state of sated stupor the terrifically talented live band –Steel – at the grungy Tex-Mex Paco’s jolted us back into consciousness with pitch-perfect covers that left us foot-tapping and wondering if Amy Winehouse and Carlos Santana were visiting Al Ain.

Need more than music to get your adrenalin pumping? Hilton organises trips to nearby adventure theme park Wadi Al Ain. A session of white water rafting, zip lining, and a 20-feet drop on the giant swing burned off all the calories we’d piled on over the weekend. And what a weekend it was! Call 03 768 6666 or email

Entertainment accompanied by charity, see your sketches animate into plush toys for poor children as part of the Red Crescent initiative. Until May 30, 12.30pm-12am weekends, 12.30pm-10pm weekdays.

Scoop of the summer

Godiva, with its jubilee of 90 chocolatey years, has trumped our chocolate fantasies with this divinely decadent dessert – the Rose and Raspberry ice-cream. Moulded from silky white chocolate, sprinkled with crispy raspberry chocs, in a rich rose and raspberry sauce and paired with a chocolate-dipped waffle cone in three flavours – White Chocolate Vanilla, Dark Chocolate, and Dark and White Chocolate Swirl – the ice-cream is sure to lure us chocoholics into heavenly bliss in the blistering summer. Dh30, The Dubai Mall.

Flippin’ good

Mouth-watering treats await meat lovers this International Burger Day at Perry & Blackwelder’s in Souk Madinat, Jumeirah – the all-American smokehouse serving trademark flavours of the Deep South. Hamburgers will be aplenty, with an authentic platter of succulent, barbecued patties inspired by American landmarks, such as the Smokey Mountain Burger, Empire State Burger and Big Texas Chili Burger for Dh75. Until June 7. From 12pm-1am. Call 04 432 3232.

Fiorelli’s sophisticated range of bags have always been a weakness, but we want to globetrot with this striking Crossbody Taylor (Dh199). In airport-chic trifecta of neutrals – navy, tan and beige – and adjustable strap, it suits every look and is the perfect grab-n-go bag. You’ll be set for walking tours, navigating public transport or idling in quaint cafés with it. Bag Voyage! At Lifestyle.
