Tea talk

Streamlining chintzy Downton Abbey-esque afternoon teas into a modern affair is glam Penrose Lounge, Four Seasons Hotel DIFC. Drawing on influences from across the pond and eras, relish a four-tier stand laden with Maine lobster rolls, New-York salmon bagels, quirky cheddar cheese and walnut orange honey-flavoured scones, Asian jing and bubble teas and dreamy desserts amid gold-mirrored bookcases and chandeliers. Definitely our cup of tea! From Dh160 per person, 3-6pm. Call 04 506 0200 or email

Tried and tested: Nature club

If you’re already eating organically, the next step would be to, of course, plunge into natural beauty. So I stepped into Tecom’s Snip Ladies Salon quite enthusiastic about treating my skin to a chemical-free facial that only used organic products. And I wasn’t disappointed.

My therapist Srishti introduced me to the products from Adonica Kube that my face would soon be slathered in. Developed in Italy, using eco-friendly tech, and award-winning? I knew I was in safe hands. In little more than an hour I was cleansed, steamed, exfoliated, masked, toned and moisturised – followed by a brilliant massage and some feel-good green tea lip cream. The brightening and lifting heavy mask felt amazing; so did the serums used. It almost felt like my skin was healing and repairing right there, lying on that table.

The next morning, I looked bright, glowing and radiant – more than anything, it felt great to know all this was achieved with no toxins being smeared on my face. It’s official, I’m an organic beauty convert.

Stage presence

After earning accolades in India, veteran actor Pankaj Kapur’s Hindi play Dopehri (based on Kapur’s eponymous novella) makes its international debut at Centrepoint Theatre, Ductac, Mall of the Emirates, on September 2. The dramatic reading of the life, loneliness and self-discovery of Amma Bi – an old woman living alone in a palatial Lucknow house – in Kapur’s unique baritone voice will draw you into the narrative. It’s directed and produced by him, so this is a triple-treat for theatre fans. Tickets from Dh150. Call 04 341 4777.

Sneaker around

Boys, with the ongoing Rio Olympics it’s now safe to dip your toes into 2016’s ambivalent athleisure trend with these fiery Puma Ignite evoKNIT trainers. These sporty kicks win the gold for combining fashion and performance – the knitted, form-fitting upper and stretchy sock-like ankle collar resemble an edgy high-top, but the chevron-grooved foam sole’s traction and cushiony rebound make running on the treadmill and running errands at the mall a stylish cakewalk. Dh560, Foot Locker stores.

Eagle eye, calling

Dubai loves things modified and personalised, so we’re delighted to discover this ultra-slim modular LG G5 phone that allows you to upgrade and customise different components. Add new batteries, mount hi-fi adjustors etc. – but let the 16MP 8MP dual rear cameras be. Its 135-degree wide angle lens captures group shots and panoramas that a stretched arm and selfie stick can’t. Plus the fingerprint scanner ensures pictures, contacts and apps unlock only with your magic touch. Dh2,399, major electronic stores.

Virtual dream come true

Squeeze in a world tour into your summer. City Centre Deira and City Centre Mirdif are hosting custom-made virtual reality game Travel Around the World, and it lets players soar in a hand glider above landmarks such as London’s Big Ben and the Egyptian Pyramids, collecting tokens within a time frame in exchange for virtual travel essentials. The HTC Vive headset creates an immersive 3D space, so you’ll experience the feel of the wind in your face! Hurry, it’s only on until tomorrow – August 20! Visit

Off base

The only thing about pizza that has us say D’oh is the doughy base and the bloated belly it incites. Cue The Pizza Guys’ easy-to-digest, healthy sourdough pizzas. The home-grown New-York style pizzeria at Executive towers, Business Bay, is dishing out Big Apple-inspired toppings on bread naturally leavened with organic yeast and lactobacilli (good bacteria), which minimise gluten content. Hail the Angry Cabbie (chicken scallopini) or graze on Central Park’s spinach, mushroom and ricotta cheese. From Dh44. Call 800 843 4897.
