Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

In the south-west corner of Bolivia’s Daniel Campos province, crested by the majestic Andes at one end, there exists a world where white skies stark white landscape and crystal-clear air merge to resemble an ethereal and, might we say, salty Photoshop trick – Salar de Uyuni. Known as the world’s largest salt flat in the world, this lithium- and sodium-rich expanse of brine pools and salt crusts created almost 42,000 years ago across 10,582 sq km was the result of transforming pre-historic lakes. On the other hand, Aymara legend says that the salt flats formed from the tears of the betrayed giant woman Tunupa.

Believe what you will, but with a pinch of salt – there’s plenty here. The blinding stretch of white is only broken by Isla Incahuasi, a rocky coral-like island in the Salar’s centre, and migrating populations of vivid pink flamingos.

In winter (June to September), tourists take shelter from the biting cold in Hotel Palacio Del Sal, which claims to be the world’s first salt hotel. Everything here, from the walls to furniture, is hewn from salt blocks. While the classy El Meson restaurant’s quinoa and lamb keep you warm, the bright igloo-style rooms will leave you with a lasting sense of wonder.
