All eyes were on Academy Award nominee Meryl Streep at the 2017 Oscars last night as she walked the red carpet wearing an off the shoulder dress and trouser duo by Elie Saab. The actress, who has been in a feud with Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld over her choice of designer for her Oscars dress this week, opted for a midnight blue, sequin-detailed ensemble from the Lebanese designer’s Spring Couture collection. She paired the conservative yet unique gown with a small box clutch, open-toe heels and diamond earrings.

While we would have been talking about Meryl’s choice of outfit anyway, it’s even more intriguing after the actress has had a week of public feuding with Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld over a reportedly cancelled dress order from Chanel. Lagerfeld accused Streep of backtracking on an order for a Chanel gown he had already began work on after she had reportedly been offered money to wear a gown by another mystery brand. He told Women’s Wear Daily that Streep’s team had told him; “Don’t continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us.”

While its widely known that many celebrities are paid for wearing gowns, Chanel has often spoken about its strict policy not to do so.

Outspoken Streep hit back at Lagerfeld however saying his allegations were completely false. In an interview with Business of Fashion her stylist Micaela Erlanger denied any payment being involved in the decision; “In the case of Chanel’s submission, which was presented with full knowledge that Ms. Streep and I — her stylist — were having conversations with various brands, we were shown sketches of a dress from their most recent couture collection. Although [it was] an exquisite gown from the existing collection, we decided to go in a different direction, with another designer.” It later seemed she was right after Lagerfeld then issued a statement to say he was misinformed. He didn’t however apologise to Streep for his words.

We can’t help but think Lagerfeld was a little bitter since there were no big Oscar nominees wearing Chanel on the night. Aside from the Lagerfeld saga it seems Streep’s outfit was the most talked about outfit in Hollywood. Even Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel made a controversial comment on the star’s gown, asking her in his opening speech “Nice dress. Is it an Ivanka.” A reference of course to Streep’s views against President Trump.
