Paris Fashion Week: Moments you might have missed

1. UAE designers making their mark: UAE-based designer Rami Al Ali presented his ready-to-wear SS18 collection in Paris. It was a very different style for the designer with simple, colour block pieces making up the majority of the collection – a huge change from his usual embellished ballgown styles. Elsewhere, there were pop-up presentations from UAE-based designers including Sem Sem, Jelena Bin Drai, Endemage and Kristina Fidelskaya.

2. Saint Laurent’s spectacular: Recently appointed creative director Anthony Vaccarello presented an epic show – but it was not so much the clothes that had everyone talking as the location. Situated underneath the Eiffel Tower, models walked on an open-air catwalk with the best view in Paris.

3. Dior tells it like it is: Last year, Christian Dior’s ‘We should all be feminists’ T-shirts became somewhat iconic. Creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri has done it again for the SS18 collection. The outspoken designer this time designed a Breton stripe top with the line ‘Why have there been no great women artists?’ Maria was referencing historian Linda Nochlin’s 1971 essay on the patriarchy’s effect on art. Nochlin was known for critiquing the art world, and has the viewpoint that men are given preference over women in the industry. Keep ’em coming, Maria.

4. Comme des Garcons’ crazy dresses: Comme des Garcons is never understated with its designs, and this season was no different. Designer Rei Kawakubo presented a collection of oversized, over-printed creations that almost looked unreal. The hooped skirt is well and truly back and bigger is better as far as dresses are concerned. To finish off the catwalk looks, dresses were paired with Nike boxing trainers.

5. Plastic fantastic: Karl Lagerfeld transformed the Grand Palais into an oasis with life-sized waterfalls and a catwalk over a lake – a stunning setting for the Chanel SS18 show. The clothes themselves had a plastic theme with boots, hats and coats made from transparent materials.

Pandora X Disney

The big kid inside me absolutely loves the new Disney collection by Pandora. The range of bracelets, charms and necklaces features cute characters including Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Cinderella and Belle and the Beast. Dear India

Level Shoe, the multi-brand shoe store in Dubai Mall, is celebrating Indian design this month to coincide with Diwali celebrations. Its Dear India campaign sees sixteen international brands collaborating with some of India’s top couture designers to create bespoke Indian-inspired shoes – brands include Cecilia and Lorenzo Bringheli, Giuseppe Zanotti, Gaurav Gupta and Alberta Ferretti.

Longchamp launches eyewear

Longchamp has launched its first collection of sunglasses and opticals with seven styles of frame. True to its Parisian roots, each pair is simple and chic in its design with understated styles and a neutral colour palette. Prices start at Dh460, available at Longchamp stores.
