With the support of the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention and the UAE Genetic Diseases Association, Shire, a global biotechnology company focused on serving people with rare diseases, has made Dubai the hub for its quest to bring life-changing therapies to people living in the UAE and wider Middle East with rare diseases such as pancreatic cancer, Hunter syndrome and short bowel syndrome.

It is estimated that around 350 million people worldwide are affected by rare diseases, with an estimated 2.8 million of them are across the Middle East. Rare diseases are associated with lifelong suffering and a shorter lifespan.

Nearly 50 per cent of rare conditions begin in childhood, and 30 per cent of children with a rare disease will not live to see their fifth birthday.
