Sweet and delicious green peas are a favourite food of many people, and the good news is that they are a powerhouse of nutrition. Amera Marian Varghese, clinical dietitian, Mediclinic Welcare Hospital says, ‘Peas are a good low-calorie source of protein, and loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients, which are health-supportive nutrients.’
'They have a low glycemic index. Protein and fibre content in peas further aids in keeping blood sugar levels under control. The insoluble fibre content in it helps reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.’

She adds that because of its fibre contents they benefit in digestion, prevent constipation, the vitamin C in it helps in building immunity and reduce signs of ageing due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
However, she cautions that peas contain moderate levels of purine, and purine-rich diet is a risk factor for recurrent gout attacks.
