When a person suffers from venous insufficiency – a condition when the venous wall/valves in the leg veins are not working effectively – it causes the blood to be retained in the lower leg.

Sitting for long hours or lack of movement increases the retention which eventually causes discomfort and generates an urge to move the limbs which we know as restless leg syndrome, says Dr Ashkan Haghshenas, expert in varicose treatment, Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery, Dubai.

It is usually noticed at night time when we pay more attention to the feeling. Early diagnosis is essential as minor lifestyle changes and some conservative treatment might help the condition.
