Exercise plays a vital role in regulating blood sugar levels, says Michael Poole, Fitness Manager at SMART Fitness- Middle East. ‘Exercise has been shown to be effective in reversing some cases of type 2 diabetes. Beta receptors in the cell will almost forcefully remove glucose without the need for insulin when you’re exercising. However, before exercising, seek advice from your doctor.’

He recommends walking and/or swimming. ‘Simple large multi-joint movements (compound lifts) can be done under an expert’s supervision. Also, stay hydrated by drinking water and always have a treatment for low blood glucose handy (a 15g carb snack is a good idea). Checking your blood sugar with your glucose meter before and after exercise is a good way to make sure you are in a safe range.’
