Q: My father, in his early seventies, has been diagnosed with prostate problem. His PSA was high. Is there a permanent cure for this in Ayurveda?

A: PSA is present in small quantities in the serum of men with healthy prostates but is often elevated in the presence of prostate cancer and in other prostate disorders. Men with a total PSA level greater than 10 ng/ml might be at an increased risk for prostate cancer. Having an enlarged prostate doesn't reduce or increase the risk of prostate cancer; you still need to continue regular prostate exams. More than half of men in their sixties exhibit some symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy, an enlargement of the prostate gland.

Generally, as men grow older, the prostate continues to grow, which can result in urine flow obstruction. Medicine is not sure exactly what causes the prostate to enlarge; changes in the balance of sex hormones might be a reason. Prostate gland enlargement symptoms include weak urine stream, difficulty starting urination, dribbling at the end of urination, frequent urination, straining while urinating, blood in the urine and urinary tract infection.

From my experience, medicines like Kanchanara Guggulu, Gokshura guggulu, Guggulu thikthakam, Varanadi, Brihathyadi kashayam, Punarnavadi kashayam, Sukumaram kashayam, Silajith are effective in similar cases; consult an Ayurveda doctor for a personalised prescription medicine.
