Q: I’m in my 30s and have a wedding and a few events coming up. How can I best plan my wardrobe? I have a budget of around Dh6,000 for some new threads.

The great thing about this time of year in the UAE is that the weather is getting cooler, affording you greater flexibility when it comes to your sartorial choices.

Now, while a lot of what I may say can ultimately come down to personal taste, I will suggest a few key pieces for the coming season that will carry you through these events in style.

Opt for a three-piece suit that can form the basis of several different looks, provided it is designed in a certain way from the get go. I would say start with this (visit a good-quality tailor) and get a smart casual suit made. Nothing too formal. Think two pockets and no ticket pocket, choose a fabric that has a bit of texture to it and opt for a simple plain colour. Consider a turn up on the trousers, so you can wear with loafers. A navy Birdseye fabric is perfect here.

For the waistcoat, you can pair on its own and it will look great with a crew neck white tee, denim and white trainers.

You can wear the three piece together for your more formal affairs, the wedding or any big event, and the suit jacket and trousers can be worn every day to work. See – you now have three different looks already.

You will now need at least three shirts, a dressy shirt that you can pair a tie with, and at least one that is more casually styled with a button-down collar in a nice Oxford fabric.

Think about two pairs of classic tailored chino pants, that will go well with the navy blazer from your starting suit (a beige or biscuit colour would work well here, or even khaki for a more autumnal look). You can layer a classic white shirt under the blazer for a timeless look, or go a bit more preppy if you so wish with a knitted polo.
