Q: I've been suffering from sleeplessness for the past several months. It began during the early months of the pandemic. Can homeopathy help?

A: Since the start of the pandemic, many of us have had to face sleepless nights due to what I term 'Coronasomnia'. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has created several challenges for those who previously didn’t have problems falling asleep. The uncertainty created by the pandemic has amplified stress levels and had a specific impact on sleep and mental health. In addition, it has brought insomnia that stems from psychological or physical exhaustion or worries about loved ones to the forefront.

A good sleep schedule can be defined as one where one falls asleep quickly, is not interrupted frequently, doesn’t wake up too early, and feels refreshed in the morning.

Sleeplessness can be caused by several factors such as poor ventilation, mood disorders, a bed that is either too hard or too soft, daily frustrations, excessive mobile phone use, odd sleeping hours, sedentary lifestyle, consuming too much caffeine, smoking, etc.

A good night’s sleep is essential for the effective functioning of the immune system, physical health and helps fight depression and anxiety. The rest and repair mode of the nervous system becomes active when one is asleep, giving both the mind and body a chance to recuperate from the many stresses of the day.

Several studies have reported that sleeping well can positively affect energy, activity, mood, and weight. We all need to sleep, but for some, it doesn’t come easily. If the quality of your sleep is light with frequent and easy waking, and nothing seems to help, homoeopathy could be the answer to your sleepless nights.

Unlike a sleeping pill, homoeopathic remedies are natural and can help one get to sleep more easily. Additionally, these remedies can calm a restless mind and help promote restful sleep. It can also help those who wake up frightened from imaginary fears.

A qualified homoeopathic doctor evaluates the presentation of the symptoms, history of the complaints, lifestyle, emotional and mental well-being, and past medical history to identify a treatment that will tackle sleeplessness at its root. Over a period of time, homoeopathic treatment relaxes the mind and improves the ability of the mind and body to handle stress effectively. If supplemented with a healthy diet and lifestyle modifications, it can go a long way in improving sleep quality.
