My two-year-old daughter has epilepsy (neither of us parents have it). Is there anything in homeopathy that can help this condition?

Epilepsy is a medical condition that occurs as a result of abnormal activity in the brain, which causes seizures or periods of unusual behaviour, and sometimes loss of awareness/consciousness. Seizure symptoms can vary from simply staring blankly for a few seconds to a repeated twitching of arms or legs, loss of consciousness and deja vu.

There are various types and classification of seizures, which range from focal seizures to generalised seizures along with many sub-classifications depending on the symptoms. Unfortunately, in about 50 per cent of people with the condition, there are no identifiable causes. The remainder can be traced to factors such as genetics, where epilepsy runs in the family or there are gene mutations; head trauma; brain conditions such as tumours and strokes; infectious diseases such as meningitis and encephalitis; prenatal injuries, where a baby’s head has been injured before birth or during delivery or due to low oxygen and poor nutrition; and developmental disorders such as autism and neurofibromatosis.

Over the last 20 years of practising homeopathy, I have seen many cases of epilepsy and most of the results have been very encouraging where the symptoms have been reduced and we have been able to stop usage of anti-epileptic medication with positive effects.

Every person has a set of symptoms, causes and predisposition and only after taking a detailed history and evaluation can a genetic constitutional remedy be selected and prescribed. It’s also important to work alongside the assigned neurologist so that the ongoing medication can be tapered and eventually stopped, after seeing positive results with the homeopathic medication.
