Q: I am 37 years old and have been experiencing red lesions on my skin that itch intensely. A dermatologist said its urticaria. Can homeopathy help?

A: Hives, or urticaria as they are medically known, are red raised lesions that can occur anywhere on the body. The lesions can appear either as small round rings or large patches that can change shape, itch, and be surrounded by a red flare, making the skin extremely sensitive to touch. The bumps vary in size and last from a few hours to several days.

Urticaria can be caused by an allergic reaction from insect bites, certain medicines or food products such as nuts, fish, caffeine and strawberries. It could also be associated with weather changes or set off by coming into contact with water. Moreover, vigorous exercises can cause an increase in body heat and make you sweat a lot, resulting in hive outbreaks. Emotional and mental stress is also is an important trigger.

In severe cases, hives are associated with violent cough, swelling of the lymph nodes, fever, sleeplessness, decreased appetite, nausea, bitter taste, and intense stomach-ache. A characteristic stinging pain is also experienced in certain instances. Rubbing worsens the symptoms. If it lasts more than six weeks, it is referred to as chronic urticaria. In some cases, the cause could be thyroid disease, hepatitis, infection or cancer.

You may be experiencing cholinergic urticarial, a form of the disease where sweating leads to the formation of bumps on the skin. Exercising and being present in a hot environment are primary triggers. It can be diagnosed by the appearance of the rash or through allergy tests.

Certain homoeopathy remedies can offer relief and heal allergic skin diseases effectively by following a gentle and safe approach. After a detailed history and discussion about symptoms, a homoeopathy doctor will develop a customised treatment plan that will tackle the root cause of the problem. The approach treats the disease and the chronic tendency that caused it.

Constitutional Homeopathic approach works best in treating urticaria. Consult an experienced Homeopathic practitioner.
