Q: My hormones seem to have gone haywire. I have put on weight, and have noticed increased hair growth on my upper lip. Please suggest what I can do.

A: Hormones are intricately synced to carry out the regular functioning of our body. However, sometimes, due to certain external or internal factors, these hormones might go out of balance. Acne, severe hair fall, stubborn weight, weight gain around the belly, facial hair growth in women, high testosterone, high DHEAs, insulin resistance  are some signs of the body showing us that there is hormonal imbalance. Women with hormonal imbalance might have all or a few of these symptoms.

Your plan of action at this point should be to improve your diet, sleep, physical activity and emotional health. Focus should be on complete well-being as each of these aspects have a significant impact on the production, activation, function, and elimination of your hormones. It’s crucial to fix all the pillars of health for a good hormonal profile.

The root cause of hormonal issues could be poor diet. This includes consumption of loads of refined carbohydrates like juices, drinks with HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), pastries, muffins, deep-fried snacks, processed foods. This can mess up your hormonal balance.

Toxin exposure such as BPA from plastics is linked to developing insulin resistance and therefore, weight gain.

A mother’s nutritional status during the pregnancy has also shown to have an impact on the hormonal health of girls as they grow. Too much or too little weight gain during pregnancy has an adverse effect on the genetic foundation of the babies.

Bad bacteria in the gut called lipopolysaccharides, recurrent infections, allergic reactions and mental stress may increase inflammation and promote insulin resistance.

Understanding the root cause of your health issue can help your dietician or nutritionist  treat it better.

A holistic approach that targets your nutrition, sleep, physical activity, and emotional health is the best way to ensure a healthy lifestyle.
