Q: My son is keen to study medicine. However I find the fees in many universities in the West to be very steep. Please advise what options I have?

A: Today, medical schools across Europe, Turkey and Russia offer medical education with a relatively reasonable fee structure. In all these countries, the program is taught in English. That said since you will be communicating with patients by year three, learning the native language would be necessary.

Russian Universities offer multiple options to study medicine, with the Government even offering scholarships to international students. Tuition fees could average $6,000 per annum. Some affordable institutions include Astrakhan State Medical University, Saratov State Medical University, Tambov State University, and Saratov State Agrarian University.

European universities have a long history of medical education and the number of seats available for international students in Europe is surprisingly generous making admission less daunting than traditional destinations.

Some universities like University of Pecs – Hungary, University of Medicine & Pharmacy Ia'i – Romania, The University of Cluj Napoca, Romania; Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski, Bulgaria; Trakia University, Bulgari; Sofia Medical University, Bulgaria; University of Nicosia, Cyprus; University of Pavia, Italy; Wroclaw University, Poland, offer world class education at affordable rates.

Turkey too has universities that offer affordable medical education. Private universities charge about $5,000-$20,000 per year while the public universities range from $1,000 to $3,000 per year. Hacettepe Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler, Ankara University, Ege University are options you could consider.

Besides these factors, the quality of education is good in some of the oldest and prestigious campuses in Europe. Campus like ETH Zurich- Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is one of the foremost names in Medicine studies. The University of Copenhagen, Denmark; LMU Munich, Germany; KU Leuven, University of Leuven, Belgium are some of the more internationally renowned campuses.
