Q: I want to get some implants done. Is it safe to get them done on the same day or wait for a few months before getting the final teeth?

There are many ways to skin a cat! Implants can be done as a same-day procedure most of the time. But like all things in life there are some other factors that need to be considered.

If it is a back tooth, where aesthetics might not be of prime importance but function is critical, a same-day procedure can be usually done without any major implications.

However, if it is a front tooth and you desire a result as natural and predictable as possible, it might be wiser to do it as a staged procedure. Of course, there are some tricks and shortcuts which might save you some time, but this differs on a case-to-case basis.

Existing bone levels and gum levels as well as the condition of the other teeth are of prime importance. Also, if you are planning to change the colour of the teeth or make some other cosmetic changes then it’s better to do these before you do the implant.

If you desire any change to the existing teeth positions and were considering something like Invisalign to correct crowding or gaps, those are also better done before the final implant procedure. The results are usually better when implant connectors or abutments are not repeatedly changed and messed around with.

So it is usually better to spend some time planning and going through the multiple options and possible scenarios before getting the final implant crowns or bridges.

To summarise, most of the time if it’s a relatively simple case it might be advantageous to go for same-day implants. But in more complex scenarios, where you have multiple teeth and multiple implants and you desire several changes, it might make more sense to stage the procedure depending on the dental surgeon’s options, skill levels and comfort.
