I am suffering from severe hair fall. What can be the reason and what can I do about it?
Hair fall is a sign of depleted nutritional reserves. Once you know the reason you can deal with the problem.
One of the major reasons of weight loss is going on a crash diet. Eating too little can lead to hair fall because you will not have sufficient reserves to ensure you have healthy strong hair and healthy skin. Sometimes people can have hair fall even when they lose weight the healthy way, as since their total calories go down the amount of nutrients they consume go down too, which causes hair fall.
The way to deal with this is to take a zinc citrate supplement and keep protein levels in the diet above 30 per cent of total calories. This is another reason why people on the ketogenic diet tend to lose hair initially. The protein content in a ketogenic diet is very low, which can cause hair loss.
Check your ferritin levels since low ferritin levels can contribute to the problem. In this case, just taking a chelated iron supplement won’t do the trick. It is important to check B 12 and folic acid levels too and supplement with all, often collectively.
Lastly, if you have been spending too much time in the salon doing hair treatments, it’s time to take a short break until your hair recovers and do some deep conditioning treatments instead.
Also remember — stressing about hair fall makes it worse.
