Food safety is of immense importance and the authorities concerned in Dubai are initiating major steps to ensure that the food available to the public and the hygiene conditions of food outlets are of the highest standards.

‘The Food Safety Department of Dubai Municipality is dedicated to ensuring that food establishments provide safe food to the Public. Inspections are done and training programs are offered to help prevent problems occurring within foods establishment,’ said Khalid Mohammad Sharif Al Awadhi.

Holder of a Masters degree in Environmental Risk Analysis Management (Food Hygiene) from the University of Wales, United Kingdom, Khalid joined the Dubai Municipality in 1987 as food health officer and in 2014 became the CEO of Food Safety Department. He is also a Member of the International Association of Food Protection (IAFP) and the chairman of the Dubai International food Safety conference.

Dubai Municipality Food Safety Department has three sections that regulates different sectors for the betterment of the society - Food inspection, Food Trade; Food Studies and System.

The Department has introduced to the fourth section - The Food Permits and Applied Nutrition section led by Noura Abdulla Al Shamsi.

Noura, who is very passionate about hygiene and food safety, says nutrition and food safety are of prime concern in Dubai.

‘We are formulating new strategies to improve food safety measures,’ she says. ‘More people are empowered with proper food safety and nutrition knowledge. We aim to educate people especially the young ones who are the future.’

A new initiative underway will particularly look to regulate health claims made by food establishments in Dubai.

As part of the project, restaurants guidelines are being drafted and this will be a huge step that will greatly help consumers to make healthier choices.
