Even as you are reading this, 2,750 people from across the UAE are braving the shifting sand dunes in the desert of Liwa, enjoying the crisp cold air, the stunning sunrise and the pure joy of being outdoors.

As the 38th edition of the Gulf News Fun Drive that was flagged off earlier today gets underway, Friday gets nostalgic about the epic event that is considered to be a must whether you are petrolhead or someone who just wants to have some fun with family and friends.

1987

In the second year still, this annual event was just a day drive, but even then it was one of the most anticipated annual events
