We’re in the last leg of the month but that doesn’t mean you have to hold out until payday - good times don’t have to always come with a price. Here are eight things you can do this weekend without forking out a single dirham.

1) Free film screenings at Cinema Akil

The independent cinema theatre at Al Quoz combines two of our favourite things – films and free – since 2014. This weekend they’re screening Prevenge, a British black comedy about a pregnant woman on a murder rampage on September 21, and on September 23, you can pick between English-Korean film Columbus or Hollywood drama Lucky. If you’re feeling generous, know that Cinema Akil accepts contributions at the gate.

2) Racy Desis Improv Night at Rove Healthcare City

The best things in life come free, like laughter at this free improve comedy night that will see local comics perform in Hindi and English followed by stand-up sets by comedians from the Courtyard Playhouse Theatre – the brains behind this event.

September 22, from 8pm; registration must at courtyardplayhouse.com.

3) Vibrance a fashion pop-up at The Taj Dubai

The 16th edition of this fashion and lifestyle exhibition will let you (window) shop for Indian and fusion ensembles, jewellery, home décor and designer collections straight off the runway. While you browse through brnds such as Pallavi Puri, Studio XI.06 by Taran C, Namaha, Eternity Jewels and Chic Therapy, snack on sweets and delicacies from Dubai based F&B brands Sweetest Affair and GINNY’s.

7) Music gig at the Hard Rock Café

Admission is free to the performance of resident five-piece party band, The Distillers, who’ve supported huge acts such as 30 Seconds To Mars, Maroon 5, and Jermaine Jackson. Groove to jazz, pop, rock and evergreen party anthems during their set on September 23.

8) Air Drive photography exhibition at M.A.D Gallery

This one’s for petrolheads (and photography buffs) who’ve blown up their budget on fuel - French photographer Renaud Marion converts his childhood fantasy of flying cars into pictures that depict classic cars hovering above the ground. You can oggle at retro beauties such as A XK120 Jaguar, Cadillac DeVille and Chevrolet El Camino levitating a couple of inches above the ground without worrying about petrol prices.
