If you skipped the karaoke nights that mushroomed across Dubai last year fearing an off-key voice or pitchy performance, then the Lip Sync War on January 6 should be music to your ears. Simply mouth the lyrics to the song that is playing in the background and take away prizes based on your stage presence and performance. The top four winners win brunch for two at Steigenberger Hotel Business Bay, Dubai, and move on to the grand finale. We recommend YouTubing episodes of American reality show Lip Sync Battle for groundwork. Entrance is free, 21 plus only. From 8pm-11pm at the open-air Backyard bar, overlooking the Dubai Water Canal at the Steigenberger Hotel.

On Tuesdays, Sass Café, DIFC, makes the countdown to the weekend easier with Mazzika, a night featuring live performances of Arabic fusion music. The series kicks off on January 10 with a performance by popular Lebanese singer Joe Ashkar (known for songs such as Habibet Albi and Sayerlo) who will be accompanied by belly dancers and live percussionists. Entry from Dh200; call 04 352 7722.

DIFC keeps the tempo going later in the week with Indie Restaurant and Lounge’s RETRO nights. Every Friday from 9pm onwards, there’s old-school pop, hard rock and disco hits of the Eighties, Nineties and 2000s including songs by Elton John, David Bowie, Prince and Britney Spears. Call 055 455 6106.

For a party that the entire family can enjoy, head to Funventure Fridays at Aquaventure Water Park, Atlantis The Palm. Every Friday until January 20, the waterpark’s beach will be overrun with activities and games such as beach volleyball, limbo and an inflatable obstacle course, followed by a four-hour set by Parisian DJ Keza (noon-5pm). All this is included in the Aquaventure Waterpark admission of Dh195 per person, which also gives you access to rides such as Leap of Faith and Aquaconda, the world’s largest water slide.

Indie and punk club night Bad House Party at Casa Latina is starting 2017 on a high note with a performance by American artist Astronautalis, aka Andy Bothwell, on January 12. Known for his genre-bending mix of hip-hop, indie rock and punk music, he will perform for just one night at the Ibis Hotel Barsha club. The event is from 9pm-2.45am; tickets from Dh100 at the door, no reservations, and it’s 21 and above only.
