Dubai-based Malhaar Centre for Performing Arts will pay tribute to one of the greatest singers of the sub-continent, Abida Parveen. The legendary singer will join online from Pakistan to celebrate her birthday month. The finest artistes of Malhaar will perform some of her famous compositions during the concert.
Malhaar’s Baithak will be streamed live its Facebook and YouTube on Friday, February 26, at 6pm. The 67-year-old maestro will also share the story of her musical journey with the Malhaar Baithak viewers.
From Jabse Tu Ne Mujhe Deewana Bana Rakha Hai, Teray Ishq Nachaya, Ji Chahe Tu Sheesha Ban Ja, to compositions from her collaborative work with Gulzar on Kabir – Man Laago Yar Fakeeri to compositions from Pakistan Coke Studio’s collaborative work Aaqa, listeners are in for a treat.
The performance will consist of poetry narrations, sharing of trivia, and singing accompanied with live instruments and more.
Abida Parveen received her musical training initially from her father Ustad Ghulam Haider, and later from Ustad Salamat Ali Khan of the Sham Chaurasia Gharana. She is recognised as one of the greatest Sufi singers of all time. She has a wide-ranging repertoire of songs originally composed by Sufi poets and sings in Urdu, Sindhi, Seraiki, Punjabi, Farsi and Arabic.
"Abida ji’s compositions are known to move audiences to a higher plane," says Jogiraj Sikidar, founder-director of Malhaar. In Friday’s edition of digital Baithak, the legend will reflect on her life and music.’’
