In Dubai, the new year brings with it a new edition of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF). It might seem a long way off before the festival ends on January 28, but apart from killer shopping deals and life-changing raffle draws, there’s so much happening around the city, from exciting performances to fashion shows, that it’s easy to miss out on events. Here’s a checklist to help you find the best of all that DSF 2017 has to offer. The best bit? Some of them won’t even hurt your wallet.

Wonderland … Alice’s Next Adventure, a performance based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, takes place at City Walk until January 11. The show features eight professional performers, actors and circus artists costumed as The Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and other beloved characters from the children’s tale. Shows at 5pm, 6.15pm, 7.45pm, 8.40pm and 9.30pm.

Wafi Mall goes down the rabbit hole, too, with Alice’s Adventures at Wafi events. On January 27, children can enjoy a Mad Hatter’s Children’s Tea Party from 4pm-7pm. Also at Wafi Mall, the children of Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra perform classical music works by Mozart and Beethoven, on January 13 from 5pm-7pm.

Beat it – LIVE!, a dance and music performance, will take place at City Centre Deira from January 12-21 with daily performances at 4pm, 6.30pm, 8pm and 9.30pm.

The Mongolian Circus arrives at The Dubai Mall on January 13. Until January 22, eight artists dressed in colourful costumes will perform solo and duo contortion, duo hula-hoop tricks, foot juggling and acrobatics. Daily performances at 5pm, 6.15pm, 7.45pm, 8.40pm and 9.30pm. Aerial ballet show Dancing in the Air takes place at Mall of the Emirates from January 13-19. Daily performances at 3.45pm, 6.15pm, 7.45pm and 9pm.

At Ibn Battuta Mall, there’s a life-size interactive game, The Ibn Battuta Travel Game, from January 12. As you travel the world (hypothetically), win prizes. Until January 25, from 4pm-7pm daily.

The Ice Age Live show and workshops will see characters from the animated film make an appearance at Ibn Battuta Mall until January 7. From 3pm-10pm, get up close and personal with Diego (the saber-tooth tiger) Manny (the mammoth) and Sid (the sloth).

There are four key events for fashion lovers this DSF. Market Outside the Box returns from January 19-28 at Burj Park. The outdoor market will once again turn recycled shipping containers into stalls featuring local and regional designers showcasing fashion, jewellery, accessories and home decor. There’s also entertainment and food trucks. The Street Runways pop-up fashion shows are back with two themed events: The Twist in Time at the Gold Souq on January 21, and Urban Trendy at City Walk 2 on January 25. Fashiontainment at Mall of the Emirates, from January 12 to 14, brings fashion and entertainment together for a show that will feature a performance by an international artist (who was not announced at the time of going to press). Fashion Express will see pop-up-style stores appear at various malls: from January 12-14 at Ibn Battuta Mall, from January 19-21 at Dubai Festival City and from January 26-28 at City Centre Deira.
