Rembrandt, Botticelli in DIFC
The highest-value paintings ever to be brought to the Middle East by an auction house will be on display on December 16 in Dubai. One of Italian painter Sandro Botticelli’s finest portraits, Young Man Holding a Roundel, and Rembrandt’s Abraham and the Angels can be viewed from 10am-6pm at Level 1, Gate Village Building 3, DIFC.
Sotheby’s will offer Young Man Holding a Roundel with an estimated price of $80 million (Dh293.8 million), which will establish it in art market history as one of the most significant portraits of any period ever to appear at auction. Of the total 136 biblical paintings Rembrandt produced, Abraham and the Angels is one of only five remaining in private hands. The two works hold a combined estimate in excess of $100 million.

Abu Dhabi Culinary Season
Three of the region’s top chefs will join hands for an Abu Dhabi Culinary Season to remember, at FAE Café from December 10-12. Chef Khaled Alsaadi, who heads up FAE Café, chef Greg Malouf, the Modern Middle Eastern Master and Michelin chef, and chef Bethany Kehdy, the Lebanese-American culinary expert and cookbook author, have joined forces for The Chef’s Table Special Edition. The nine-course special will have the three chefs taking on three courses each. The meal is priced at Dh350 and available for dinner service only. Dishes from chef Bethany include scallop kebbeh, red pepper harissa, coriander and garlic butter, puffed burghul; venison and quince Manti Maamoul, cucumber slaw, rose butter, hazelnut; and ox cheek, shallot and rhubarb tagine.
Chef Greg’s creations include giant yeast sambusak stuffed with kashkaval cheese and porcini mushrooms, saffron labneh; quail in kataifi, feta sauce whipped with Dijon mustard; and hand of Abu Dhabi, halawa ice cream, pistachio, honey wafer, plum caramel.
Finally, chef Khaled’s delights are pumpkin soup, cumin brioche, local cheese, tomato pearls, mint and arugula salad, turmeric tapioca sable; hammour, dried lime curry, root veg crisps, preserved lemon gel; and saffron and cardamom curd with orange blossom granite.

ADU winter camp for high school students
Abu Dhabi University is organising a winter camp for high school students from December 13-23. The two-week-long winter camp oriented around the theme ‘Entrepreneurship: How to Start Up Your Business’, aims to empower them with new skills and the confidence to demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset. Faculty members from ADU will virtually deliver a set of modules to students, that will help familiarise them with the process and technicalities of starting their own business and learning the strategies and tools required for each stage of the entrepreneurial journey. The programme modules, set to take place four days in the first week of the winter camp and three days in the second week through 90-minute sessions, will focus on various aspects of the startup journey, using practical tools and online resources, lectures, case studies, discussions, interactive exercises, and skill development exercises. Sharjah’s Focal Point
The third edition of FOCAL POINT, Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual art book fair, which is free and open to the public, returns from December 16-19. The fair presents a vast array of printed matter by artists, writers, and independent and established publishers from the MEASA (Middle East, Africa, South Asia) region and beyond and has even expanded its reach to include titles on art history, theory and criticism. FOCAL POINT 2020 will take place across four days with specific time slots allocated for visitors to facilitate safe shopping and browsing of the hundreds of books in the historic Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, the 175-year-old heritage house that sits across Sharjah’s port. From December 16-18, the fair timings are 4pm-10pm, while on the 19th the fair timings are 2pm-10pm. The showcase also features a variety of learning workshops suitable for children and families as well as live music performances. Visitors are encouraged to book a slot online in advance, but bookings will also be available at the venue.
