To say my significant other was floored would be an understatement. She was delighted, thrilled, moved and tickled pink when she laid her eyes on the romantic table setting at the Beau Rivage Bistro, in Grand Millennium Business Bay.
Tucked in a corner of the European-inspired café and snuggling close to the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the Dubai Canal waterfront, the table for two was sprinkled with rose petals – blood red, nothing less. We were there to sample the Valentine’s Day special menu – it’s available for all lovers to enjoy on Feb 13th – and the friendly staff pulled out all stops to ensure we’d have a lovely experience.
To set the pace, we had chocolate cherry mocktails while admiring a splendid yacht slowly sail down the canal.
The appetisers arrived next – thin slices of beetroot-cured salmon, topped with dainty squiggles of wasabi cream; cucumber noodles and cherry capers. Executive chef Mohamad Chabchoul explained that he chose beetroot-cured salmon to keep the pink (read Valentine) theme in the dishes.
Salmon is a favourite of mine and this dish was just delectable.
The soup – cream of roasted tomato – with a dollop of whipped ricotta was excellent. A few sliced roasted cherry tomatoes in the soup ensured the pink/red theme continued.
‘For mains we have Surf & Turf,’ said chef Mohamad. A beef medallion topped with jumbo prawns, next to a potato fondant set close to a generous scoop of purple potato mash completed the imaginatively plated dish. The medallion was perfectly done, juicy and flavourful, while the shrimp was moist and had just the right bite. I eyed a succulent jumbo prawn on the wife’s plate, but she drew the line. Love doesn’t include sharing seafood, she laughed.
However, it was the dessert that took the cake. Continuing the theme of red, we were served chocolate volcano cake with berries coulis in a chocolate box. The wife who has a sweet tooth, was delirious with delight as she smashed the box to get the silky smooth chocolate ‘lava’ to bubble out of the cake. Relishing each spoonful, she declared it was the best she had tasted in a long time. I agreed.
Through the window we watched a dhow cruise lazily down the canal. Inside the bistro, the boys from Westlife softly crooned, Hello, my love… I’ve been searching for someone like you… Sheer bliss.
