Design a dinner

It’s that time of the year when deal-hunting gourmands scour new culinary gems throughout Jumeirah Restaurant Week. The Rib Room, Jumeriah Zabeel Saray, is joining in on the food fun this year with a three-course set menu (Dh180 per person) that lets you design your own meal from three options per course. Our winning combo? The rib salad, succulent Australian 1824 tenderloin and the summery Eton mess full of crunchy coconut meringue and icy rose sorbet. Over 40 restaurants from the Jumeirah Group across Dubai and Abu Dhabi will showcase the best of their cuisine at reduced prices from Dh95 to Dh370, now until May 23. Call 04 366 5866.

May flower magic

Birthday gemstones are so last year. We’ve found our birthday scent with L’Artisan Parfumeur’s Rose Privée Eau de Parfum, which is a tribute to the rare May rose from Provence, France, that blooms only in our birthday month. This delicate medley of May rose, carnations, magnolia and patchouli is what we’ll be spritizing before the party starts. Dh450 for 50ml, Dh599 for 100ml at Areej stores in the UAE.

It’s a jungle in there!

As temperatures rise we need new ways to entertain the little ones indoors – step forward the innovative Kenzi Box. The educational craft company boxes activities, games and step-by-step instructions themed around a particular idea, delivered to your doorstep monthly. For May it’s Rainforest Adventure. Embark on a tropical escapade by building a jungle scene as a family, designing explorer’s binoculars and assembling monkey beanbags with your tots. Forest fun! Dh185 per box. Welcome the weekend

Some Fridays all we crave is the simplicity of a late and lazy breakfast like the one newly launched at Maison Mathis. The Belgian restaurant at the Dusit Thani hotel on Shaikh Zayed Road whips up a three-course set menu from 12pm to 3pm every Friday featuring favourites like eggs Benedict on brioche, French toast and Belgian waffles with berries and whipped cream. Packages start at Dh250 for two people. Email or call 04 335 7769.

Pearl of a present

We can’t think of a more apt gift to mark our 18th birthday than a Robert Wan charm bracelet. Featuring pearls with Arabic calligraphic cast in 18k yellow, white and rose gold, they’re a modern take on tradition. Find out the meaning of each pearl with a free consultation by Pearl Bar staff. We’ll be plumping for a champagne-coloured pearl – for joy – and a golden Arabic ‘F’ for Friday, obviously! From Dh1,250, Harvey Nichols.

Flight of fashion

Winged trends have always soared high on the fashion horizon – be it eyeliner, sleeves and now bags like this sunshine yellow Rebecca tote from Kurt Geiger’s S/S15 collection. Made of luxe Saffiano leather, we’re sure it will fly off the shelves! Also available in grey, black and white, this is just the right side of functional chic – perfect for when you’re travelling this summer. Dh1,349, Kurt Geiger stores in the UAE.

Musical massage

If you’re celebrating your birthday – or want to celebrate ours – and love music, why not splash out on Heart and Soul Spa’s harp healing therapy massage? During a 60-minute massage of your choice tune out stress as harpists Lidia Stankulova and Diana Pandova play live and conjure up melodies in rhythm with the therapist’s strokes. The combo of music and movement promises to boost energy flow and harmonise your brainwaves. Dh950, Heart and Soul Spa, Al Barari. Book 48 hours in advance by calling 04 320 7350.

Only the best will do

We won’t have to fret about what to order when eating out this month. French-inspired restaurant Bentley Bistro at The Galleria Mall, Abu Dhabi, has cherry-picked a sharing menu of its most requested (and lip-smacking) dishes. Enjoy scrummy starters like no-rice risotto made with mushrooms and potatoes and move on to the pan-seared venison for mains and Nutella chocolate fondue for dessert. Wash down those yummy dishes with two mocktails included in the set price of Dh260 per person. From 12pm to 11.30pm. To book call 02 626 2131.

Bright idea

We’re no Monet, but thanks to The Bright Side painting classes at Ductac, Mall of the Emirates, we can now hope to create some pretty pictures. Drawing on American psychologist Betty Edwards and her Painting on the Right Side of the Brain concept, which explains how the right hemisphere of our brain regulates creativity, Russian artist Yulia Klimontova will guide you through a relaxing three-hour session that will leave you happy and energised. Dh250 per person per class, Dh650 for three classes. Call 052 837 6611.
